I switched from Gmail to Fastmail a few weeks ago, and I’m shocked by how much better it is. My email is actually useful again.

The funny thing about doing tweets via indie web is when you go back and read them...why would anybody ever want to read these again, including me, and how would anybody even understand them out of context?- This whole exercise is forcing me to spend a lot of time thinking about how, as a society, we’re becoming more and more efficient at pumping out larger and larger volumes of pure garbage.
Congrats on the move! You won’t even miss Gmail. Been with Fastmail for 3+ years now and love it.

Yes!!!! Have been trying to reduce my goog footprint and fastmail has FAR AND AWAY been the loveliest part. I love my email again!!- So far I’m finding my inbox just isn’t filling up like it did, even with Fastmail set to fetch from my old account. I think it helps that push notifications actually work, so you get mail one at a time instead of in an unmanageable pile.
No filters though? :( I use fastmail but still run another email app just for filtering.- Omg wdym, I use a MILLION effective lovely filters on Fastmail?
- I do Add Rule From Message and it's like what Gmail offers but effective and guesses at the fields quite well and is EXCELLENNNNNTTTT. Works about the same on desktop but here's the per email view and then the view from Settings to see all my Rules.
- oh, but, turns out, it *is* available. I just have to go directly to pobox's UI and manually add the rule
- Filtering was one reason I didn’t switch for a long time, but at some point I realized most of the things I needed to filter on weren’t filterable in gmail. I *think* it used to be a more powerful feature, I’m not sure what happened.
- Oh wild!! I never used pobox, just started straight out with fastmail about 1.5y ago. It is absolutely critical for me now!
- I have a vague memory of it being more powerful in Gmail too, but now it feels like an absolute crapshoot.
Did you move your old mail over? I use search with my over 10 years of Gmail history (!!!) all the time- Yep, that was surprisingly easy and fast. It just connected to Gmail via IMAP and pulled it all over for me. And that was 17 years of email, 54000 messages.
- I also briefly considered running my own email again for the first time since 2005 but that might be a bit too cursed
- I also considered running my own, for the first time since ~1999, and then remembered that time I had a hard drive crash and lost two years of emails
- Really sticking it to Google by using my giant brain to do off hours and weekend personal ops work
