People often complain that Slack discussions are hard to follow. I wonder how much of it is due to the fact that we use sloppy English in Slack: sparse capitalization and punctuation, verbal grammar, etc. Itβs just physically hard to read.

- @estoner I dunno, I love reading 8 straight hours of streams of consciousness to parse which things I need to act on or ignore.
- @actualmargit because iβm old and itβs important to always be mad at people that are different ages than you are currently and whatever their norms are
- @estoner I don't even mind that (and likely am a contributor to that particular problem) but people need to use threads!!!!!!1111
- @actualmargit @emilyst @estoner Capital W why are you attacking me QUESTION MARK EXCLAMATION POINT! π
- @estoner For me, the fatigue seems to always surround non-proper pronoun use. What is βitβ? Who are βtheyβ? Many times, folks leave zero clues in Slack messages and it causes any of the following: Follow up questions, Assumptions; Confusion.
- @estoner So because thatβs true, I tend to err on the side of elaborating, even if that means I end up sounding pedantic or superfluous. Butβ¦ is that better? π
- @brianloveswords See, threads I sort of like but then they cause unexpected behavior, like certain people will thread my DMβs and Iβm like βdude itβs just us in here this just makes it harder to readβ
- @estoner slack should allow customization of thread style so I could have inline nested in DMs and folded in most channels
- @brianloveswords I fully support this. Especially if thereβs a modal popup if somebody does the wrong thing in the wrong context. βIn this house we have inline ONLY.β
- @actualmargit @brennx0r @estoner if we remain perfectly still, it will not see us and leave the chat again
- @estoner i joined a company where ppl use complete sentences and punctuation, and i have some news for you
- @abandonedbranch Do people only write, like, full on epistolary letters from the 18th century, like βDearest colleague, it has been a fortnight since we corresponded last about the continuous delivery mechanismβ
- @estoner any chance youre looking to combine your management skills with novella writing?
